Young scrum-half's debut may have to wait

WESTOE'S young scrum-half Matthew Mellish, 18, has been named to play for the first team tomorrow.

However, the ex-Newcastle Falcons junior academy player, who has won North of England Under-18 honours, could miss out because his rugby commitments with Barnard Castle School will have to take precedence.

It is surely only a matter of time, though, before this young man who has made his mark in the Seconds, and whose father, Paul, was a quality First XV flanker, makes his debut at senior level.

There will be widespread satisfaction at Wood Terrace that another bright young prospect, John Irving, a strong and utterly wholehearted winger, did make his first appearance from the bench towards the end of the Harrogate game, and could well do so again tomorrow.
