Westoe out to make up for poor show
WESTOE will want to be on their best form against Hull Ionians tomorrow to make amends for the sub-standard performance that saw them slump to a 33-17 defeat at the Brantingham Park ground back in December.
As captain Gareth Nesbit said: "That was a bad show and we need to correct it. But they are on the fringe of the relegation zone and will be eager to pick up points from us. So a tough game is in prospect."
The trouble, as the Wood Terrace faithful will ruefully testify, has been that week by week you never know which Westoe team will take to the field – the scintillating or the shoddy.
Without a doubt, at the outset of this first venture on to the national scene, supporters would have gladly settled for the Dunes Adventure Island-sponsored outfit being in sixth top spot with just six games to play.
Frustratingly, however, they can only speculate how much better his team would have fared if they had not so often blown hot and cold.
Consistency is something that director of rugby Andy Howells and his coaches will demand next season.
It was good to see Paul Bird back in action at Fylde on Saturday after being sidelined since mid-December with a persistent calf injury.
The 6ft 5ins lock, who came off the bench in the 48th minute, played a hefty role in the splendid team cooperative action that gained the last-gasp winning try.
Sad, though, that a strong burst down the right flank by strong and eager winger John Irving, 18, in only his second outing and first start at senior level, was halted just short of the try line.
With backs David Haswell and Dan Rayson available tomorrow and James Walker back in the squad, he returns to the Seconds, but nobody doubts he is a good 'un for the near future.
