Waggy's swift move to Foxes

MARTYN Waghorn admitted his permanent return to Leicester had been "a bit of a blur", writes IAN LAWS

The 20-year-old was the big deadline day departure from Sunderland yesterday and could end up costing the Foxes up to 3m.

Waghorn scored 12 Championship goals on loan with Leicester last season, and was given a tremendous ovation from the home fans when he went back with Sunderland for a pre-season friendly last month.

Now he hopes to play a part in firing City back to the Barclays Premier League.

Waghorn said: "I was out shopping on Monday when I got the call to say Leicester were interested, and within a couple of hours I was on my way down. It has all been a bit of a blur.

"I have come to play football and help the club get where it belongs."

City chairman Milan Mandaric said the deal was a clear sign that City's new owners – the Asia Football Investments consortium, led by Aiyawatt "Top" Raksriaksorn – are ambitious to drive the club forward.

"Top has recognised a talented, young English striker and has provided the financial backing to turn the dream of Waggy's return into reality," said Mandaric.

"I know the fans will be as pleased as I am at the return of Waggy.

"I know that Paulo (Sousa, City manager) has wanted to make this signing for quite some time."

Teemu Tainio also parted company with Sunderland yesterday. His contract was terminated by mutual consent and he has joined Dutch side Ajax.

Tainio spent last season on loan at Birmingham City, but played only six games after being hampered by a knee injury.

Injuries also meant he managed just 21 Premier League games for Sunderland after joining from Spurs in July 2008.

Taino links up with his old Spurs boss Martin Jol at Ajax, who said: "Teemu is someone who can do his job in the midfield. He is a winner, a player with a good mentality.

"I have worked with him at Tottenham Hotspur and continued to follow him.

"I am happy the board at Sunderland was willing to co-operate despite a running deal with Teemu. Therefore it was possible for us to sign Teemu."
