Villagers finish season on a high
WHITBURN ended their season on a positive note with a two-wicket victory at Felling in the Warmseal Durham Senior League on Saturday.
Tony Greaves picked up 4-31 from his opening 15-over spell, and Ian Elliot returned figures of 3-42 as the Gateshead side were knocked over for just 91.
However, the Universal Sealants-sponsored side did not have things all their own way after tea as Paul Leonard looked to claim an unlikely victory for the home side.
Leonard claimed 7-36, but had no answer to Andy Turns, who was the one batsman to prosper on a bowler-friendly wicket.
Turns found the boundary on seven occasions, as he finished unbeaten on 43.
The result ensured that the Villagers ended the campaign in fifth place, the first time they have finished outside the first three since 2004.
Runs were easier to come by in the Second XI fixture at the Village Ground, where Eden Elstob – who has played little cricket due to injury over the last two years – raced to 131 as Whiburn posted a score of 247-5.
But Felling's late order held on at 198-8 to deny the second string – who have looked much stronger in recent weeks – notching up their first victory since June.
