There must be three teams worse than us
I'M starting to wonder if I'm getting too old for this.
There was no life-defining moment, no flash of inspiration, no divine intervention – instead there's been a dull thudding in the back of the head, which turns out to be the looming realisation that things don't look too good at the minute.
OK, so I may have been a little slow on the uptake – others have been insisting that it had all went a little Pete Tong some time ago.
However, I prefer to think it was my sunny disposition, my positive outlook, my blind faith that kept me looking on the bright side.
Now, I find myself stuck between a rock and a hard place.
If I continue to insist that everything is all right, and that it is only a matter of time before we turn things around, I may well be carted off by the men in white coats for having lost all grip on reality.
And yet, I just can't bring myself to start shouting oh woe is me, and we're all doomed – not least because as bad as things are, I still think there are at least three teams worse than us.
I know that is scant, if any, consolation at all, but the way I see it is that any straw that can be grasped should be.
The thing is (and I know it's easier said than done), but a win this evening would change our outlook dramatically.
I know taking all three points against Bolton Wanderers won't suddenly mean that we are all right, and don't have a care in the world.
However, what it would mean is that we have taken a fairly big step along the road to safety. I think four wins, or possibly three out of the last 11 games, will be enough.
Of course, that isn't what we hoped for at the start of the season, but I guess we'd settle for it right now.
It would be nice, if just for once we weren't suffering from the affects of 'squeaky-bum time,' but that's where we find ourselves, so we might as well try and make the best of it.
I'm no doctor, so I'm not sure if prescribing Prozac for every Sunderland supporter is a good idea, but it might help take the edge off things.
Then again it could also turn us all into those 'happy-clappy fans' – a label which seems to be handed out to anyone who is trying to promote the glass-half-full argument.
I have no doubt that these 'happy-clappies' (I'm probably one) are sick as parrots over our current form and position, but they keep on backing the lads.
After all, we are Sunderland fans, and that is surely what we do – get behind the boys in the red and white.
It's probably true that I am getting far too old for this, but what else would I be doing if wasn't dreaming, believing and hoping that my football team will get it right?
We have to keep the faith, it's just how it is.
Sure, go home have a good moan, go on the internet and vent your spleen, but keep believing.
