Shields star Adam rejects move back home
SOUTH Shields-born Adam Rundle has revealed he turned down a move back to the region before signing for Morecambe this week.
The winger penned a two-year deal with the Shrimps as he looks to get his career back on the right track.
Rundle had been a free agent after being released by Rochdale in February, and spending the rest of the season at Chesterfield.
And it meant he wasn't short on offers, including Conference side Gateshead bidding for his services.
Rundle admits to being tempted to return to the region, especially with his young daughter still living here, but the lure of staying in the Football League was too hard to resist.
He said: "A couple of League Two clubs put offers on the table, and Gateshead and Darlington also tried to get me.
"But when Morecambe came in, and I saw what they had to offer, I knew that was the move I wanted.
"There was a little bit of temptation when Gateshead came in.
"I've got a one-year-old daughter, and living away from her is hard, but I've got to provide for her.
"And I wanted to stay in the the Football League, and not drop into the Conference."
Rundle has more than 250 Football League appearances under his belt now, but suffered a difficult campaign in the season just finished.
His contract with Rochdale – where he made 127 appearances in almost four years, including scoring at Wembley in the play-off final back in 2008 – was terminated by mutual consent in February, and he joined Chesterfield on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy quickly moved for the left-midfielder at the end of the season, having missed out on promotion when they were soundly beaten by Dagenham & Redbridge in the play-off semi-finals.
And the 25-year-old hopes the move will help reignite his career.
"I'm delighted to be signing for two years," said Rundle. "I'm signing for a club that's on the up.
"They finished fourth in the table, and are moving into a new stadium.
"I'm going there hoping to help them achieve promotion. Morecambe are trying to do things the right way with promotion and moving stadium.
"I'm not signing for a club that's happy to sit in mid-table.
"Rochdale had a few wingers, and I was getting rotated, which I wasn't used to. I have been playing week-in, week-out since I was 17.
"I went out on loan, but that just didn't work out either.
"But when I had offers on the table, teams know what I'm capable of.
"Last season was just one of those seasons.
"It hasn't happened to me before, but I'm hoping now that I'm settled I can show my best form."
