Shields leave it late

SOUTH Shields gained their first league win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Billingham Synthonia at Filtrona Park last night.

South Shields had the better of the early exchanges with Lee Paul Scroggins being denied by a superb save by Porter in the Billingham goal within the first minute.

Billingham responded well, and only a fine save by Josh Carmichael in the Shields goal prevented Harbron from giving the visitors the lead.

On 17 minutes, Billingham did take the lead as Iley capitalised on an error in the Shields defence to fire home from close range.

Shields pressed forward looking to restore parity, but were denied by a combination of some fine defending and good saves by Porter, who denied Jonny Wightman and Paul Kane.

With the half-time whistle approaching, Wightman flicked on a long clearance to Kane, and the striker chested the ball down before rifling it into the top corner of the net.

At the start of the second half, Shields began to play with confidence and played some good football, but were continually thwarted by the Billingham defence.

Ten minutes into the second period Shields were awarded a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Paul Haxon fired the ball towards the corner of the goal, but was denied by a finger-tip save by Porter.

Shields pressed the Billingham side back in their own half as they went in search of a winning goal.

With time running out, Shields were awarded a free-kick on the right that was floated in towards the Billingham box by Barrie Smith, and found Lee Paul Scroggins on the edge of the box with his back to goal.

Scroggins fired the ball past Porter with a spectacular bicycle kick to give Shields an advantage that they were to hold on to to gain the victory.

Shields are next in action away to Penrith on Saturday.
