Shearer backs rising star for the top

RISING star Remie Streete has been tipped for the top.

Streete was last night presented with the inaugural Jack Hixon Award by Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer at Sport Newcastle's annual awards dinner.

The 15-year-old Boldon School pupil plays for Newcastle's youth team after turning down an approach from rivals Sunderland.

And Shearer was happy to present the award, set up in memory of legendary scout Hixon to recognise up and coming talent, to Streete, of South Shields, who played for Boldon Colts until he was 13.

"It was great for Remie – it was a pleasure to present the award, which I'm sure Jack would also be pleased with," said Shearer.

Hixon – who helped launched Shearer's football career – passed away aged 88 last December.

Shearer went on: "His family were there, and it was good to see them. It's always emotional where Jack is concerned – we all miss Jack.

"He was great for football and great for me. It's a sad loss for us all."
