Porter and Clark face big guns in World Trials

CHARMAINE Porter, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, and Luke Clark, from South Shields Harriers, represent the North East in the Inter-Counties Championships and the World Trials at Birmingham tomorrow.

Porter, in the under-15 girls' race over 4km, faces national champion Jessica Judd of Essex, and most of the other leading challengers as all of the English counties field teams of six.

Clark, also in the under-15 section and over the same distance, competes in the event where again the national champion – James McMurray, of Hertshire – starts favourite.

The North Eastern CC champion Michael Wilson, of Sunderland Harriers, is also on the under-15 team as they go for high counting positions with more than 300 competitors set to start.

Hebburn's David Wardle has dropped out of the senior men's team, but team manager Steve O'Gara, of Wallsend, is optimistic that they can regain the trophy they won in 2008.

North Eastern champion Patrick Martin, from Sunderland, leads the challenge over the 12km event.

The World CC Championships take place at Bydgoszcz, Poland, on March 27, 28, and Shildon's Kate Avery – the European junior bronze medalist – is the main hope from the area.

On Sunday some of the talented young athletes from Jarrow and Hebburn AC compete in the North Eastern Counties Open Pentathlon and North Eastern AA Championships at Gateshead.

With all age groups doing the 60m, hurdles, shot putt, long jump, high jump and 60m, Lucy Turner goes for gold in the under-15 girls' section.

Mia Hodgson, from Chester-le -Street, from the Monkton Stadium Combined Events Squad, will be a major challenger to Turner over the five events.

Abigail Smith, Katie Corner and Lucy Mulvain, also from the Jarrow club, chase medals in the under-17 girls' section, while Emma Johnson goes for the under-13 girls' title.

Former Shields member Ashleigh Wood, now at Gateshead, starts favourite for the under-20 women's event.

Chris Hunter, who moved from Jarrow and Hebburn AC to Gateshead Harriers, should be in contention for the senior men's title.

The meeting starts at 10am in the Gateshead Indoor Arena.
