Prizes on offer for Sand Dancer runners

SOUTH Shields Harriers Sand Dancer six-mile mixed terrain road race on April 15, has received an extra prize from one of the main supporters, while Stage Coach also proved additional sponsorship.

Ian Morgan’s Powerhouse Gym is offering one year’s membership and gym entry worth £540, which will go to the first athlete from South Tyneside to finish.

With Arndale Sports and Nutrients, Hart Doors Systems, South Tyneside Council and the Sand Dancer pub also backing the event, an extensive prize list is on offer to the senior and veteran men and women contesting the race over the costal paths on the Leas.

Entry fees of £7 for club runners and £9 for unattached should be sent to R Shaw, 7 Burnside, East Boldon, Tyne and Wear, NE36-0LS or online at www.southshieldsharriers.co.uk.

Cheques should be made payable to South Shields Harriers.

The North Eastern Veterans Championships are incorporated into the event, while a three-mile junior run precedes the senior race at 10.30am.

Patricia White, from the Shields club, is holding Run England training nights at Gypsies Green Stadium on Mondays and Fridays.

Runners of all abilities are welcome to train and attain fitness to compete in long-distance races.

The Sand Dancer race is the first target, while the long-term aim is to complete the Great North Run in September. Training starts at 6pm on both nights.

Jarrow and Hebburn AC and South Tyneside MBC promote their Winter Indoor Grand Prix for Young and Minor Athletes in Monkton Stadium on Sunday.

Amelia and Jessica Leslie go for titles in the under-13 and under-11 sections respectively over 60m and 600m, while their younger brother Joshua could win awards in the under-nine boys’ 60m and 300m.

With races up to under-20 on the programme, the first four in all finals receive trophies. The under-nine girls’ 60m heats open the meeting at 9.30am tomorrow.

Houghton Harriers stage the Royal Signals North Eastern Road Relay Championships at Hetton Lyons Country Park tomorrow.

The senior men’s 6x2.2 miles event has attracted 45 teams, while the senior women’s four stage race has 27 teams registered.

The veteran men race in categories over-40, over-45 and over-50 complete the six stages, with the event due to start at noon.
