No safe Haven for Hebburn
HEBBURN Town's difficult start to the season continued last night when they went down 4-2 at home to Whitehaven.
It was a similar story of missed chances for Rob Marsden's side as they were made to pay by their clinical visitors.
Hebburn have now picked up just two wins from their opening seven games in the Northern League Division Two, and sit 13th in the table going into the weekend's game at home to Horden.
They created almost double the amount of chances than Whitehaven last night, but were constantly hit on the break, and ended the game with nine men after Paul Catto received a red card, and Marc Brocklehurst was injured in the latter stages.
Hebburn came storming out of the blocks, and were ahead inside a minute. Gary McCartney released Michael Armstrong down the right channel, and he drew the keeper before slotting home into the right corner.
But on nine minutes, Whitehaven were level as they hit Hebburn on the break.
Darren Donald was left one-on-one with home goalkeeper Andy Hunter, and he made no mistake to slot home.
And just two minutes later Hebburn were behind through a replica strike by Donald after the home defence was left outnumbered from a counter-attack.
Hebburn had chances to get back on level terms, but McCartney, Armstrong, Willie Crew and Jamie Elrington were all unable to make the most of good opportunities.
And they were made to pay when Leigh Dunn made no mistake from close range on 28 minutes to put the Cumbrians 3-1 ahead.
After the break, Hebburn continued to have the majority of the play, but their hopes of getting back into the game were not helped when Catto was shown a red card for raising his hands against a Whitehaven player.
The home side refused to lie down, however, and the 10 men pulled themselves back into contention on 73 minutes when McCartney crossed for Armstrong to prod home.
McCartney then fired over with just the keeper to beat, but the game was all over with 12 minutes remaining when Kevin Connolly converted, despite suspicions of offside, to seal the points for Whitehaven.
The game ended on a sour note for Hebburn when Brocklehurst was carried off after a hefty tackle, and with all substitutes used, Hebburn finished with nine men.
