Newcastle may ask big-earners to take pay cut
HIGHLY-paid Newcastle United stars face taking a pay cut, even if the club are promoted back to the Premier League, it is reported today.
While most players look forward to a pay rise after winning promotion, the Daily Mirror says Newcastle's players are being told they face cutbacks.
The likes of Alan Smith, Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini are all still on big money from the contracts handed to them during the Magpies' big-spending Premier League days.
But owner Mike Ashley is fed up with paying out 40m a year in wages, and will instead offer extended deals to big earners, with the players picking up less money per year.
Smith and Nolan would see an extra year added to their current contracts, with their wages spread out over the length of the deal.
The move could lead to an exodus of players, although it may appeal to some of those in the twilight of their careers.
In January, Ashley is said to have put a 10,000-a-week cap on wages for any new signings.
