Newcastle can win trophies - Campbell

SOL Campbell has insisted he hasn't come to Newcastle United to wind down his career – and believes he can win more silverware.

The veteran centre-half has won a raft of trophies in a superb career with Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth.

And he believes that under the management of the 'fantastic' Chris Hughton there is no reason why he can't add to that haul during his time on Tyneside.

Campbell is set for another run-out tonight when he will line up for Newcastle's reserves against Liverpool at Whitley Park (7pm).

The 35-year-old is desperate to build up his fitness after his move to the club, and said: "It's a great challenge for me to come to Newcastle.

"I've had chances to win cups and trophies in the last seven or eight years, and enjoyed them. For me, it's the same here.

"I'm sure the Newcastle fans would like to still see silverware and to get back into Europe.

"That would definitely be a great thing to achieve in my career here.

"It's certainly what I'm aiming for. Nothing is impossible."

Campbell has worked with Hughton before during his time at Spurs, and insists the job which the unassuming Newcastle boss is doing should see him recognised as among the best managers in the country.

Hughton and assistant Colin Calderwood guided United to the Championship title last term after steadying the ship when the club sailed through choppy waters after relegation from the Premier League.

And the fact it has been done on a shoestring budget is even more impressive, according to Campbell.

He added: "The gaffer is fantastic – look at what he done last season, he could be right up there with the best of them.

"I think he's going to do great again this season too.

"He's passionate about his football, and he's a workaholic.

"Colin Calderwood is the same, and the two together have been great for Newcastle.

"Newcastle are lucky to have them.

"They're conscious of everything. They want the club to move in the right direction.

"They've calmed all of the gossip down and concentrated on football, which is what this football club should be about, and how it should be run.

"Chris has done a fantastic job.

"And when you look at the finances that everybody has to deal with in football, not just Newcastle, it's pretty impressive."

Campbell, meanwhile, is concentrating on building up his fitness after enjoying a 45-minute work-out against Sunderland reserves last week.

"Things are starting to come together for me," he said.

"As I've said, it's down to hard work, and hard work only."
