Magpies sweating on injuries
CHRIS Hughton was left counting the cost of Newcastle United's win at Deepdale after Ryan Taylor and Danny Simpson picked up injuries.
Taylor suffered an injury in the warm up and left the stadium with his foot in a protective cast, while Simpson was forced off in the second half with a thigh problem.
Both injuries were being assessed today by the club's medical staff, though Hughton is hopeful they are not serious.
"We'll see (about Taylor) – he'll be assessed," Hughton told the Gazette. "Hopefully, it's not too serious.
"And taking Danny off was a precaution – we hope he's back soon."
Hughton – who was without Nicky Butt because of a calf problem – also revealed after the game that striker Andy Carroll was forced off in the second half by a bout of illness.
However, injuries and illness couldn't take the shine off a fourth successive win for United, with Kevin Nolan's ninth goal of the season ensuring the club returned to the top of the league.
Hughton went on: "Everybody played their part – it was a hard running game. It wasn't our best performance, but what you had were players prepared to run and fight for the cause.
"We chased and harried and put them under pressure. You could see that it wasn't going to be a game of many opportunities.
"They had a very good period in the second half where they broke and tried to pierce open our back four. We had to be good defensively, and we were."
