Hebburn boss delighted to keep promise
HEBBURN Town boss Paul Bennett is delighted he managed to keep a promise he made 16 months ago to the club’s committee – and has vowed to make sure he doesn’t break another one.
Bennett steered the Hornets to promotion this week, with Hebburn set to play Northern League Division One football next season for the first time since 2001.
It has capped a memorable campaign for the club, who reached the last qualifying round of the FA Cup as well as their league exploits.
It was no more than Bennett, and assistant Andrew Wood, promised when they took over the reins almost a year and a half ago.
He said: “We promised the committee 16 months ago when we took over that we would get them promotion, and we’ve delivered.
“It was a three-year plan: the first year was consolidation, the second was to have a good FA Cup or FA Vase run and to get promotion, and the third was to consolidate in the First Division.
“So we’re right on track. Now we just need to make sure we keep our word for next season.
“It’s all for the committee who have backed us so much. I think they’ve seen Hebburn promoted only once in the last 20 years, and they came straight back down, so hopefully we can stay up next season.”
The celebrations started on Monday night when the squad and committee watched Team Northumbria beat Morpeth Town to guarantee Hebburn couldn’t be caught, and the party will continue tomorrow after their home game against Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.
Bennett added: “It’s great that we managed to finish the job before tomorrow’s game.
“It’s the only game where we’ve got everyone together, so we’re going to enjoy it, do our presentations afterwards and have a good night.
“It’s a chance to rest a couple of players and to also give games to one or two who haven’t featured as much lately.
“We’ll enjoy it after the nerves and tension of recent weeks.”
