Chandler delights Gateshead boss
IMPACT ... Jamie Chandler.
GATESHEAD boss Ian Bogie has praised the impact made by new boy Jamie Chandler.
The Boldon-born midfielder signed from crisis club Darlington this month, and has been an instant hit with the Tynesiders.
Chandler has made three appearances, scoring once and netting from the spot in last week’s successful FA Trophy penalty shoot-out at Braintree Town.
And Bogie is already delighted by his contribution.
“Jame’s been outstanding since he’s come to the club,” he said.
“He’s shown his quality, he’s invigorated us and passes the ball well. He’s stood up to the plate, and he’s really enjoying himself already.”
Bogie, meanwhile, is still on the lookout for a reinforcements during the transfer window – having ruled out using Liam Hatch at the back.
Gateshead have released Ewan Moyes, leaving captain Ben Clark and James Curtis as the only recognised centre-backs at the club.
Former Sunderland and Hartlepool star Clark was suspended for Saturday’s 3-3 home draw with Lincoln City, when the Tynesiders conceded in the final 10 minutes for the sixth time in seven games at the International Stadium.
Clark returns for tonight’s trip to Kettering Town, but Bogie is determined to add a specialist central defender to his squad, and insists that while new striker Hatch’s experience of playing at the back at Darlington is a bonus, he does not intend to make use of it except in an emergency.
“We’re still looking defensively, we need another defender,” said Bogie.
“The window doesn’t close until the end of January so we’ve got a bit of time on our side, and even after that you can bring emergency loans in.
“We brought Liam here as a centre-forward. We’re aware that he can cover as a centre-back, but for me that would only be in a real emergency.”
n SOUTH Shields make the long journey to Penrith tonight for a Northern League Division One clash.
