It's Ghana be touch and go

ASAMOAH Gyan rates himself 50-50 to start his first Premier League game for Sunderland at Wigan on Saturday.

The Black Cats' 13m record signing arrived back in the North East last night from international duty with Ghana.

Protracted negotiations over his deadline-day move from Rennes on August 31, and the fact Gyan had to go to Africa for a friendly against Swaziland, has hindered the 24-year-old's preparations for life in England.

Gyan said today: "I have not really trained for the last 15 days, so my fitness is not 100 per cent.

"I played for Ghana, but it was a struggle for me. I will talk to the staff here and the manager, and then a decision will be made about Saturday.

"I am here to play, and it is up to the manager to decide."

After signing on deadline day, Gyan flew to Africa and featured for 85 minutes as the Black Stars beat Swaziland 3-0 in Sunday's African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Gyan said: "I had a 10-hour flight from South Africa to Paris, and then I had to go to Rennes for a day to collect some things because I didn't have a chance to do that before I came here to Sunderland last week. It has been a very busy week.

"I got back here last night, and I don't know if I will train today.

"I will train tomorrow, and we will see how everything is.

"I am really excited to be here ,so I want to get things started quickly."

Even last weekend, with the transfer deadline less than 48 hours away, Gyan was unsure about where his future would lie.

He added: "It was 60-40 that I would come here. I was ready to go to Ghana when I got the call to say I should come here for the medical.

"I knew the negotiations were happening, but I didn't know if the move would go ahead. Thankfully, everything was OK, and now I can begin to plan my life in England."
