LOAN MOVE ... defender James Tavernier has joined MK Dons.

DEFENDER James Tavernier has followed Newcastle United team-mate Alan Smith to MK Dons in a loan move until the end of the season.

It’s the 20-year-old’s third loan spell of the campaign, following successful periods at Carlisle and Sheffield Wednesday, and will see him link up with the League One promotion hopefuls until May.

However, he can be recalled at any time after the first month of the loan should Newcastle need him.

Tavernier – who has made two first-team appearances for United, both in the Carling Cup – spent last season on loan with Gateshead. That move saw him make huge strides and he ended last season a regular in Alan Pardew’s first-team squad.

And the Magpies boss is keen to see him develop further with more senior experience, having declared earlier this month that Tavernier had been “sensational” in training since returning from Sheffield Wednesday.

However, the deal has not been completed in time for Tavernier to make his Dons debut against Wednesday tonight.

On Sunday, ex-England international Smith joined the Dons on loan from United, also until the end of the season.
