United salvaged some pride from Spurs defeat – Pardew

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ... Alan Pardew urges his United players on in Saturday's 5-0 defeat to Spurs.

ALAN Pardew insisted there was “pride” in defeat for Newcastle United at White Hart Lane.

The club suffered the heaviest loss of Pardew’s reign on Saturday, with Tottenham Hotspur winning 5-0.

Newcastle were blown away by an irresistable first-half performance which saw Harry Redknapp’s side net four goals.

But Pardew took heart from his side’s more resolute second-half display.

“I’m proud of them in the second half, I really am,” Pardew told the Gazette.

“It would have been easy to buckle, or point fingers at each other. We didn’t, and we stood firm and stood together.”

The result wiped out United’s previously positive goal difference.

While the defeat itself was not disastrous, Newcastle are sixth in the Premier League, the five goals conceded could prove to be costly, with Liverpool, in seventh, boasting a significantly better goal difference.

Pardew and his players are looking to qualify for Europe, and the battle for the fifth, sixth and seventh places looks like being a tight one.

“It was a game for us that we could lose,” Pardew added.

“The unfortunate thing is the manner of it, and the scoreline, because the goals against column isn’t looking so pretty.

“That might be crucial in 13 games time. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham captain Ledley King hopes Redknapp will snub England and stay at the club.

“As a group of players, we love him. Hopefully, he’ll stay,” said King. “Harry’s brought the club on massively.”
