The Toon Sho will go on

PRESTON North End boss Alan Irvine admits it was a relief Newcastle United's visit to Deepdale came too early for Shola Ameobi.

And United's former Academy director – who guided the striker through the ranks at St James's Park – predicts Ameobi will pick up where he left off when he finally returns from long-term injury.

Irvine's side were beaten by a Kevin Nolan goal on Monday night.

Five-goal Ameobi had to be content with watching the game at home on TV, though he is expected to return next Saturday.

"In a way I was delighted that Shola didn't play – but then I looked at who else they could play, and they were all players who can cause you problems," Irvine told the Gazette.

"Of course I want Shola to be successful – likewise Steven Taylor. I worked with them at Newcastle, and I'm delighted they're playing first-team football for the club.

"He started the season very well, and he'll be a handful for any defence in the Championship."
