Super scout Carr’s Newcastle United transfer warning

NEW DEAL ... Newcastle's chief scout Graham Carr.

SUPER scout Graham Carr has warned that Newcastle United won’t delve into the transfer market this summer unless the right player becomes available.

Carr yesterday signed a whopping eight-year contract at St James’s Park as the Magpies signalled their intent to keep hold of their star-finder.

The 67-year-old has been responsible for unearthing gems such as Cheik Tiote, Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Demba Cisse for bargain prices in recent seasons as part of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s philosophy of exploring the cheaper foreign market for new signings.

It’s a policy that United will continue to adopt this summer, with Carr rewarded for his fine work with a bumper new deal.

But he insists that while he will keep scouring the continent for new players – with the Magpies in need of strengthening their squad ahead of a busy season combining the demands of European football and the Premier League – Newcastle won’t be signing players just for the sake of it.

“If we couldn’t get who we wanted this summer, we wouldn’t sign anybody,” insists Northumberland-born Carr.

“That’s because we want to get things right here.

“We would not just bring a body in to fill a hole.

“That has always been the policy.

“It has to be the right age, right criteria and right attitude.”

Ashley’s policy in recent seasons has been to only sign players aged 26 and under to ensure that there is potential resale value should big offers come in for them.

Carr’s reputation has soared on the back of uncovering such players as Tiote and Cabaye for modest fees, but he insists manager Alan Pardew and Ashley should be given the main credit.

““Mike has backed this all the way, and done it with finance,” he added.

“And Alan and his coaching staff have organised the side well.”
