Shane Ferguson looking to press his first-team claims at United

CHANCE ... United's Shane Ferguson came off the bench at White Hart Lane.

SHANE Ferguson left White Hart Lane with mixed emotions after the heaviest loss of Alan Pardew’s reign.

The 20-year-old was bitterly disappointed at Newcastle United’s 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, but also heartened by his 45-minute run out.

Chances have been few and far between for Ferguson this season.

And the versatile player could yet be loaned out for first-team experience by manager Pardew, who sent Ferguson on for the second-half half with Newcastle trailing 4-0 after an irresistible 45 minutes from Tottenham.

United were better after the break, and Ferguson dug in on the left side of Pardew’s midfield, though they couldn’t stop Emmanuel Adebayor adding a fifth goal for Spurs.

Ferguson was put on ahead of unused substitute Hatem Ben Arfa, who frustrated Pardew in a recent run of games.

And the Northern Ireland international, one of only two players to speak to the media after the game, was grateful for the opportunity.

“It was good to get on for more experience,” Ferguson told the Gazette. “The manager had faith in me and put me on, which was good, but the result was disappointing.

“I just want to show people what I can do, and push my way into the team.

“Hopefully, I can stay involved. I’ve got to work hard in training, and try and get a couple more appearances under my belt.”

Tottenham took a fourth-minute lead through Benoit Assou-Ekotto, and from that moment on there was no stopping Harry Redknapp’s side, who underlined why their manager is expected to succeed Fabio Capello as England coach.

Reflecting on the game, Ferguson said: “Everyone’s gutted.

“We know we’re better than that, but Tottenham have been fantastic. It just shows the quality they have.

“The first two goals just came so quick. We tried to regroup, but Spurs took had their chances whenever they had them.”

“To be fair, in the second half all the lads dug deep and gave their all. We didn’t want them to make it any worse.”
