Newcastle will react well to White Hart pain – Pardew

LOOKING FOR A REACTION ... Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew.

ALAN Pardew’s confident his Newcastle United players will react in the right way to their 5-0 defeat at White Hart Lane.

Pardew’s players returned to training today after being given a day off yesterday.

The defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was the heaviest of Pardew’s reign at St James’s Park.

Match report: Tottenham Hotspur 5 Newcastle United 0

But Pardew refused the criticise his team, weakened by injury and suspension, and the absence of Cheik Tiote, after the game, which saw Harry Redknapp’s side score four goals in a devastating first-half performance.

However, United remain sixth in the Premier League, and well placed for a return to Europe.

And work has already started ahead of the February 25 visit of struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers, who yesterday sacked Mick McCarthy after a dismal run of results.

“The most important thing in the Premier League is how you react,” said Pardew, who will have Tiote, Yohan Cabaye and Ryan Taylor available again.

“We now have to react to it. We’ve had three key midfielders missing, and when you play a team as good as Spurs, you need all of your best players.

“We didn’t have that, and we were punished for not having round pegs in round holes.”

Take Spurs defeat on the chin

Meanwhile, United have handed teenage midfielder Stephen Logan a professional contract.

Logan, 17, has signed a two and a half year deal at the club.

“I’m really pleased with the way things are going, and it’s great to get my first pro contract,” said Logan. “I’ve been working with Joe Joyce since I was about 14 as I’ve come right through the ranks at Newcastle.

“He’s played an important part in my development, and is very experienced.”
