FABRICIO Coloccini told of his European dream after being honoured for his contribution to Newcastle United’s revival.
Coloccini was last night handed the North East Football Writers’ Player of the Year trophy at the Ramside Hall Hotel, Carrville, near Durham.
United manager Alan Pardew, his coaching staff and goalkeeper Steve Harper rose to their feet and applauded Coloccini as he accepted the award.
“I thank my team-mates, the fans and, of course, the club,” Coloccini said in his acceptance speech.
“They gave me the opportunity to play for one of the best teams in England.”
Coloccini had earlier helped Newcastle beat Aston Villa 2-1 at St James’s Park.
The result saw United move into fifth place in the Premier League, and Coloccini has challenged his team-mates to stay there.
“We have to keep working like this,” he added. “We have dreams.
“Why not give a present to the fans at the end of the season?”
