Newcastle United ace may miss rest of season

DISAPPOINTMENT ... Sylvain Marveaux.

DISAPPOINTMENT ... Sylvain Marveaux.

SYLVAIN Marveaux’s desperate to rejoin Newcastle United’s Premier League campaign – but the winger admits he faces a battle to play again this season.

Marveaux had hip and groin surgery after breaking down against Everton in November.

And the 25-year-old, pictured, faces another two months of rehabilitation before he can rejoin training, leaving him just a few weeks to get match fit before the end of the season.

Marveaux missed the bulk of last season with a groin problem, and he had hoped his injury problems were finally behind him when he joined Newcastle last summer on a free transfer from French club Rennes.

“I’m not thinking of playing again yet – I want to do it step by step,” Marveaux told the Gazette.

“I’m working to train again. I don’t know if I will play, because I won’t train for two more months, but if I can help, I will.

“It’s getting better now. I’ll start running next week. The worst – surgery and everything – is behind me, and I just want to be on the pitch. I hope I will train in a couple of months.”

Luckless Marveaux faces lengthy spell on sidelines

The months Marveaux spent in the treatment room last season have made him stronger mentally, and whether or not he plays this season, he’s confident he can repay manager Alan Pardew’s faith in him over the term of his contract.

Marveaux signed a five-year deal at United after a proposed move to Liverpool broke down.

“You’re always disappointed when you have a big injury like that, but I’m just happy to see the team doing well,” added Marveaux.

“It’s not the first one for me, so I just think there are more important things in life.

“I have four years left on my contract here, so I just want to be on the pitch soon, and to play for the team and the fans, and show what I can do.”

Marveaux – who yesterday took time out from his rehabilitation to help children from Newcastle School for Boys, in Gosforth, with their French – is glad the club’s other players from across the Channel have settled into life on Tyneside on and off the pitch.

The former France Under-21 international is close friends with Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa, Gabriel Obertan and Demba Ba.

And all four have played significant roles in the club’s season so far.

Ba’s Senegal team-mate Papiss Demba Cisse, another French speaker, marked his debut with the winner in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa, the result taking Newcastle back up to fifth in the Premier League.

“I’m really happy for them – Yohan, Hatem and Gabby are my friends,” said Marveaux.

“Demba’s also doing great. I’m happy every time they play well, and I hope Papiss will keep playing like this and scoring.”

Marveaux was joined at Newcastle School for Boys by Spanish-speaker Jonas Gutierrez, and the pair answered questions on their football careers and lives in their own languages.

“It’s good to speak French,” he said. “I don’t know if they understood everything I said, but they tried. It was nice.”
