HIGH HOPES ... Remie Streete and his Newcastle United team-mates.

SOUTH Tyneside Remie Streete has won the coveted Wor Jackie Award.

The defender is one of the brightest prospects at Newcastle United.

And Streete’s form for the Under-18s and reserves this season has seen him involved in first-team training in recent weeks.

Streete has high hopes for Newcastle career

The 17-year-old, from South Shields, will be handed with the award, which is presented each year to an oustanding young player from the club’s Academy, at Sport Newcastle’s annual dinner next month.

Previous winners of the award include Andy Carroll and Peter Ramage. Two years ago Streete was presented with the inaugural Jack Hixon Award, by the club’s all-time record goalscorer, Alan Shearer.

More pressing for Streete is tomorrow night’s FA Youth Cup tie against Queens Park Rangers.

Streete – who turned professional late last year – suffered a groin injury in last week’s Northumberland Senior Cup victory over Bedlington Terriers. However, Streete – whose father Floyd played for Wolverhampton Wanderers – has recovered from the problem, and will lead Dave Watson’s side out in the fifth-round tie.

Newcastle beat Watford and Darlington in the previous two rounds of the competition, which United last won in 1985.

Meanwhile, striker Phil Airey’s had his loan at Gateshead terminated by the non-league club.

Amble-born Airey – who will be released by United in the summer – made two appearances for Ian Bogie’s side.

The 20-year-old’s loan spell at Hibernian earlier this season was cut short by injury.
