Middlesbrough boss expecting quiet day

QUIET ... Boro boss Tony Mowbray.

AS expected there has been little movement in or out of the Riverside Stadium this month as Middlesbrough have looked to avoid the transfer window limelight.

The club’s main aim was to keep hold of the academy graduates trio of Matthew Bates, Rhys Williams and Joe Bennett and with 24 hours to go they look to have achieved this.

However Boro did manage to acquire their top January transfer target when they captured centre forward Lukas Jutkiewicz from Coventry City, initially on an emergency loan and two days later on a permanent four-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The limited funds the club had was spent on Jutkiewicz so despite Boro boss Tony Mowbray wishing to boost his ranks further it has not been possible unless other members of his playing staff move on. Something that Mowbray was very adamant would not happen at the start of January as his side go in search of promotion.

In the last few days Boro boss Mowbray said: “Things can happen very quickly, but I don’t think we’re going to be out there spending money.”

“We need to be ready, though, just in case we get some money to reinvest. There’s been no offers to buy any of our players, which is good.

“You never know what can happen. The window looks to be picking up momentum a little in the last few days.

“It’s been a very quiet window compared to last year, for instance. I don’t think we’re going to be overly proactive [this late] in the transfer window, [but] we would like to add some players, like all clubs.

“We’ve asked a few questions but it’s not as if we’re out there with the intention of spending loads of money on those players that we’re asking questions of.

“And potentially those deals we’ve asked about might only come about if there is an outgoing. So it’s a little bit up in the air.

“I don’t want to say nothing will happen because something might happen, but I’m not anticipating lots happening.”

One late deal that might have to be pushed through on deadline day is bringing in goalkeeping cover after Boro’s number two keeper Danny Coyne had to be substituted in the Wear-Tees derby on Sunday with a calf injury.

No1 Jason Steele is also still nursing an injury which may leave Boro with only 18-year-old Connor Ripley to call on between the sticks for the game with Leicester City on Wednesday if Coyne cannot recover in time.
