Magpies are Braced for lift-off

FORMER Newcastle United star Paul Bracewell has backed the club to make a charge for Europe – and then soar to new heights.

The Magpies sit just a point off the Champions League placings going into the last third of the season after a remarkable campaign so far.

United’s form has taken everyone by surprise, with many people expecting them to fall away after their fine start, but even after the 5-0 thumping by Tottenham Hotspur in their last game, Newcastle are still well-placed to push for a European spot.

And Bracewell insists the Toon Army have a role to play in carrying the side to success.

He said: “I’m sure they sat down at the start of the season, like most Premier League clubs, and their first aim was to avoid relegation.

“But if you can keep winning and keep turning performances out it creates a bit of momentum, and the fans will help to carry that on.

“Everybody’s thinking, ‘Where are we going to finish?’ but I don’t see any reason why Newcastle can’t qualify for Europe after the start they’ve made to the season.

“If they do that then things could really take off, just like they did when I joined the club in the Second Division in 1992.”

Bracewell was one of Kevin Keegan’s key signings in his first spell as manager, playing a vital role as United romped to promotion in his first season at the club, and then helping establish them as a Premier League force that got into Europe two years later.

Despite his previous allegiance to rivals Sunderland, he became a fans’ favourite at St James’s Park with his commitment and ability, playing 85 times in total over a three-year spell with United.

“Having played there I know what it’s like,” he added.

“The commitment you show sort of projects onto the terraces, and vice versa. The fans will back you all the way.

“I think there’s still more to come from this Newcastle team.”
