Ashley's made a transfer window 'statement'

CHRIS Hughton is confident Newcastle United have made a "statement" in the transfer market.

Hughton has signed five players this summer to strengthen his Championship-winning squad for the Premier League.

While he couldn't prise striker Robbie Keane away from his old club Tottenham Hotspur, Hughton's confident he's done good business in the transfer window.

And Hughton has praised owner Mike Ashley for his financial backing.

A club statement early in the summer had suggested there would be no money spent, but Chiek Tiote and James Perch were signed for fees, and a loan payment has been made to Olympique Marseille for Hatem Ben Arfa.

"When I look at the five players we brought in, it's certainly a statement of what the owner wants to do," said Hughton.

"It shows we've been working hard with the owner and the chairman. We've got what we need.

"We have Sol (Campbell), who has great experience.

"It's not just his ability, it's what he can bring around the place as well, because he's such a positive influence. All the others will benefit from that.

"We've brought in James Perch and Dan Gosling, who are still at a developmental age and are part of the future here.

"In Cheik Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa, we have players who have the experience and the right profile for the direction the club wants to be going in.

"They're the targets I have been able to bring in, and that's come with the input from the owner and the chairman."

Ben Arfa, Tiote and Sol Campbell are in line to make the squad for United's home game against Blackpool on September 11.

Hughton added: "They would be fit and available to play."
