Carroll facing fitness fight

NEWCASTLE United hitman Andy Carroll faces a race to be fit for Saturday's Premier League match with Blackpool at St James's Park.

But manager Chris Hughton is confident his leading scorer will be ready to lead the line.

Carroll pulled out of the England Under-21 squad last week with an ankle injury suffered in the build-up to the game against Wolves, and still hasn't trained ahead of this weekend's game.

United will continue to assess the big striker this week, but will be desperate to have the player in the starting line-up when Ian Holloway's side come to Tyneside.

"He's doing OK, but he still hasn't trained," said Hughton.

"We have to make sure he is rid of the problem.

"When it happened before the Wolves game, he didn't train for five days.

"And there was still a lot of swelling afterwards.

"We're confident he'll be OK for Blackpool, but as always, we'll continue to assess his fitness throughout the week."

Carroll has netted four goals in his three Premier League games this season, and will be looking to pick up where he left off against the Tangerines last term in the Championship.

The Gateshead-born striker scored in both games against the Lancashire coast side, and will see the clash as a fantastic opportunity to add to his growing tally.
