'Bramble will be a real star' - Bent

DARREN Bent says he's not surprised Titus Bramble has had such a solid start to his Sunderland career.

And the England striker says that the centre-half – who returns to former club Wigan Athletic this weekend – could well go on to become one of the stars of Sunderland's season.

Bent was convinced from the first moment it emerged Steve Bruce had returned to the Latics to sign his former player, that it was an excellent acquisition for the club.

And he says he still remembers the way Bramble first burst on the scene when the two were teenagers at Ipswich Town – the striker saying it was obvious from the start that the defender was destined for the Premier League.

"Titus is just a great signing for us," he said.."I know he's had his hard times, but I watched him go through the ranks at Ipswich Town when he was sensational in the first team.

"The move to Newcastle didn't work out well for him, but he went to Wigan and Steve Bruce helped him improve a lot.

"And from the moment he signed, it was obvious he really wanted to hit the ground running with Sunderland.

"It wouldn't surprise me if he went on to play the best football of his career here.

"I think he's approaching his peak years now and that's great for him and for Sunderland."

Bent and Bramble head off to Wigan this Saturday, with Sunderland's team likely to look very different from the last time the two teams met.

Bruce could field as many as half a dozen summer signings on Saturday, and Bent is a fan of the new blood injected into the club.

He said: "We've got some fantastic players in the squad here, and I think we can go on to have a better season than we did last season."

"I think we can have a very useful side once things settle and the players get to know each other.
