South Shields author scores treble
Carol Dean’s stories - Charlie Dryden and the Charnwood Abbey Ghost, Granny Ridley and the Alien and Charlie Dryden and the Guardian - are her 16th, 17th and 18th books.
The mum-of-two says her literary career began with her making up stories for her own children.

This usually happened on rainy weekends and school holidays, with my son writing stories about ghosts or vampires, and my daughter, who is the youngest, playing her part by drawing pictures to go with the stories.
“During this time, we added to the stories each time we wrote together to keep the suspense going for the next writing session.”
Carol spent most of her working life as a fundraiser for various charities in the North East, before a career change when she worked for Durham Constabulary as the special constabulary recruitment officer and trained as a Special Constable.
After taking early retirement, she worked as an NVQ tutor and marker for a local college and as an exam invigilator for students.
