The new building at Lord Blyton Primary School will create new space which can be used for teaching as well as a home for a breakfast club for pupils.
Proposals for the new facilities at the Blyton Avenue site, submitted in April, included a ‘modular building’ for breakfast club activities associated with the primary school and additional teaching space.

A new access was planned from the original school via the store room which will be repurposed as an entrance to the building.
The plans were given the green light by South Tyneside Council’s planning authority on Tuesday, May 5.
A decision report reads: “The proposals would make a positive contribution to the functions of an existing school by providing additional facilities suitable for teaching and breakfast club or similar use, which should be given positive weight in decision making.

Planners added that the site for the new building does not form part of the existing play area available to students and no playing fields would be removed as a result of the development.
Under planning conditions, the plans must be brought forward within the next three years.
