Taxi firms involved in name row

A NAMING row has broken out between two rival South Tyneside taxi companies.

Ray Hunter, who owns Marsden and Cleadon Taxis, in Fulwell Avenue, Marsden, and Alan Ashton, who owns Express Taxis, based in Jarrow, both claim to have the rights to use the name Marsden Taxis.

Express Taxis has posted business cards through letter boxes that say "Marsden Taxis, now part of Express Taxis".

Mr Hunter said the Jarrow-based firm is "out of order" for claiming to have bought his business and is losing trade because of the move.

But Mr Ashton has hit back, claiming that he owns the rights to the name after buying Marsden And District Taxis in 2007.

The rivalry began when the previous owners of Marsden And District Taxis closed the Fullwell Avenue office and sold the firm to Mr Ashton, who used the Marsden phone numbers under the Express Taxis name.

The following year, Mr Hunter reopened the old office under the name Marsden And Cleadon taxis.

Now Express Taxis owner Mr Ashton has started using the Marsden Taxis name he bought three years ago.

Mr Hunter said: "It's completely out of order. The cards use our name and it looks like we've been taken over."

Express Taxis owner Alan Ashton said: "When I bought the business, I bought the name Marsden Taxis.

"If anyone shouldn't be using it, it's Mr Hunter. I've let it go for long enough. I'll be getting my solicitors involved."
