Staff and students row for Sir Bobby
COLLEGE cadets and lecturers have handed a cash boost to one of the North East's leading charities after completing an oar-inspiring challenge.
Staff and students from South Tyneside College raised more than 2,000 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation by taking part in a 10-mile charity row down the Tyne last month.
The event was organised after two former staff were diagnosed with cancer.
The team rowed from near the Pitcher & Piano on Newcastle Quayside to the college's Marine Safety Training Centre in South Shields.
Yesterday, they handed over the cash to the cancer charity.
Captain Tommy Proctor, a lecturer at South Tyneside College, was a key member of the team.
He said: "It was a great achievement, and on behalf of the whole team I would like to say 'thank you' to the Sea Cadet units Collingwood, Kelly and Derwenthaugh, without who we couldn't have done this.
"It's a great honour to hand over so much money to a charity founded by such a wonderful man.
"Two of our ex-colleagues were recently diagnosed with cancer, so we are proud that we have helped raise a substantial amount of money to help research into the disease."
The event was split into four stages, with the teams rowing naval whalers from Newcastle to Hebburn, then to Tyne Dock in South Shields, on to Mill Dam, and then to the training centre.
The Sea Cadets provided equipment for the event, as well as manning the rescue boats which accompanied the fleet.
Pauline Buglass, head of fundraising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, said: "It was a pleasure to meet the staff and students of South Tyneside College, who raised such a significant amount of money.
"They undertook a very physical challenge, and I understand the weather made things quite difficult.
"We fully appreciate all their efforts, and the money raised will help support people fighting cancer."
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has now raised more than 2.4m.
As well equipping the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre, based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital, the charity has funded a specialist research nurse and doctor, and enhanced a children's waiting area at the NCCC.
It has also contributed 30,000 to the new Teenage Cancer Unit at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
