Seven-day catch-up: January 29-February 4

WELCOME to our regular Sunday morning round-up of the stories that have been making the news in South Tyneside this week.

Only one subject dominated the headlines for the first few days - football, and more specifically, the closure at 11pm on Tuesday of the January transfer window.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill moved to bolster his squad by signing England left-back Wayne Bridge from Manchester City on loan until the end of the season. You can read here how we reported that story.

Over at St James’s Park, fans eyed the approaching deadline nervously after seeing centre-forward Andy Carroll depart for Liverpool in a British record £35m deal 12 months ago. There was no such drama this time round, and the main story concerned a bid by Celtic to take striker Leon Best. You can catch up here with that story.

Once all the wheeling and dealing was over there was actually some football to be played, and both our big two enjoyed excellent midweek wins. Click here to read our Newcastle United writer Miles Starforth’s account of the Magpies’ 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers.

If you’re a red and white, you’ll prefer Graeme Anderson’s report on the 3-0 win over Norwich City at the Stadium of Light which raised the Black Cats to eighth, their highest league position of the season. Read that here. and see how it turned out here.

On the news front, one of our best-read stories of the week was about an investigation into the selling of pirate DVDs, and you can catch up with it here.

On Tuesday, we reported on a new food hygiene rating system introduced in South Tyneside, where more than 1,000 restaurants, cafes and takeaways are given a star-rating of between zero and five, depending on how environmental health officers rate every aspect of their business. One of the most shocking stories of the week was in Wednesday’s paper, where we told how hospital chiefs could face legal action after leaving an elderly patient to die alone in a toilet. Bats could scupper a beer-maker’s plans to transform a disused South Tyneside church into a new brewery. Read here why Jarrow Brewery owner Jess McConnell is getting in a flap.

On Friday, we told how staff at South Tyneside Council managed to rack up an astonishing 127 years’ worth of days off sick last year. Read that story - and the reaction it sparked - here.

Last but not least, this week saw us launch our annual search for the unsung heroes who are the Pride of South Tyneside. The awards are now in their 10th year, and we’re looking for nominations. Click here to find out more and nominate someone who you feel deserves some recognition.
