Seven-day catch-up: March 4-10
WELCOME to our regular Sunday morning round-up of the stories that have been making the news in South Tyneside this week...
Both clubs have been in the news for off-the-pitch reasons too. On Wednesday, we told how Sunderland are facing another planning battle over plans to install floodlights at their Academy at Whitburn Moor, Cleadon, Read here how they are hoping planning chiefs don’t show the proposal the red card.
Newcastle United’s news was more positive. Their financial results for the year ended 30 June 2011 revealed that they are close to breaking even for the first time in years. The good news couldn’t last, however, and by Thursday we were reporting the latest fans’ protest at owner Mike Ashley changing the name of the club’s ground from St James’s’ Park to the Sports Direct Arena. On Monday we carried the heartbreaking story of South Shields dad Glen Cunningham, who was facing a desperate race against time after health chiefs refused to pay for a cancer drug which could give him precious time with his family. You can read that story here.

There was more good news for the family of disabled youngster Amarni Gibson, who had been threatened with the loss of their mobility-funded car used to ferry her about. You can read that story here.
Another sports club in the news was South Shields & Westoe Club, which has rugby, cricket, tennis and squash facilities at its base in Dean Road. It is considering a multi-million pound move, which you can catch up with here.
Rounding off our round-up of the week’s news is another planning story, about a proposal by South Tyneside Council to boost town centre trade by moving South Shields Market to King Street. Read about that plan - and the reaction to it - here.
