Residents object to late club plan

WORRIED residents in Jarrow town centre fear it could become a “pub crawl area” if opening hours at a social club are extended.

South Tyneside Council’s licensing sub-committee has received an application from The Tunnel club in North Street for a half-hour extension to 12.30am.

It’s a proposal which has alarmed those living near the former Jarrow Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

They already claim the club is a “constant nuisance”, due to anti-social behaviour from club-goers and noise from the premises.

And when members of the council’s licensing sub-committee meet next week, they will hear objections from more than 30 residents, the police and the council’s own environmental health department.

Concern is centred on claims that the private members’ club is now effectively being run as a pub.

And they say there are already enough public houses in the immediate area – including The Alexandra, the Ben Lomond, the Royal Oak and the Queen’s Arms.

In a report to the committee, one resident claims: “The club has been a constant nuisance since we moved into the area four years ago.

“To allow the club more powers to funnel more drunks down our streets would be an absolute disgrace.

“I think the council needs to decide if they want the area to be a residential area or a pub crawl area – the two are mutually exclusive. The very fact that the club is changing its name to The Tunnel Club and asking to keep its club status, but allowing non-members in and have entertainment throughout the week, is just not on.”

Another added: “Some of the customers of the club stumble out after 11 at night, shouting and singing and generally being a public nuisance.”

The campaigners have received support from town Labour councillor Emma Lewell-Buck in their bid to prevent the extension.

No one at the club was available for comment.

The licensing sub-committee is to meet in the council chamber at South Shields Town Hall, starting from 10am on Friday, February 10.

residents are scared it would become a pub crawl area, they have just answered there own question , how can you blame the tunnel club with other pubs in the immediate area for the noise and anti social behavour, do the other four pubs not sell alchahol or do they just hold prayor meetings, what is next on their agenda after the tunnel club

I love the sucking-on-a-lemon look the councillors adapt for the Gazette photographer!

Do the Council's "partners", the police, get to share any "commission" paid by the property developer?

What planet are you on? On practically every story you accuse cllrs of tanking bungs and commission. This comes across as rather dimwitted. How on earth would the council benefit from supporting local residents??? Where the hell would commission come into it? Sounds like something cllr Kahn would accuse the council of.

If brain cells were phosphorous you wouldn't have to start a small fire. Isn't this a good thing? Some people are never happy unless they're complaining, some very simple people, who are happy to expend their energy knocking those who try to do good but would never get up off their backsides to do anything positive.

New (private) houses near an old club. Says it all really. The land the club is on would be "useful" for more new houses. Maybe "commission" is available for the Council?
