Queen's Speech blow for asbestos campaigners
A DESPONDENT asbestos campaigner fears industrial disease victims suffering from pleural plaques could be back to square one.
A move to restore compensation for people with the asbestos-related condition has run out of Parliamentary time and wasn't mentioned in yesterday's Queen's Speech.
That means it won't be made law in the near future.
Campaigner Bob Cusworth, 72, of Ribble Walk, Calf Close Estate, Jarrow, said: "I think it's a disgrace.
"It looks like this has been talked out by the Government, and if the Tories get in at the next general election, there'll be even less chance of compensation for pleural plaques."
The blow follows hope raised by Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn's talks on the issue with Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Justice Secretary Jack Straw.
A Private Members' Bill, aimed at restoring compensation for thousands of pleural plaque victims, including dozens in South Tyneside, failed to make it through the Lords in time.
Mr Cusworth, diagnosed with pleural plaques six years ago, added: "I fear we're back to square one.
"Stephen Hepburn has been putting on the pressure, but we're still no further forward on getting compensation restored."
It is hoped the PM will meet with MPs in the next few weeks to discuss the issue.
