Pupils' healthy eating drive proving fruitful

LESSONS in healthy eating are simply top of the class at a South Tyneside school which is facing the axe.

Epinay Business and Enterprise School, in Clervaux Terrace, Jarrow, has teamed up with The Food Chain North East CIC to offer residents locally grown and affordable fresh fruit and vegetables.

Despite recently being judged as "outstanding" by Government inspectors, the Jarrow school faces closure as part of a major shake-up in borough special schools.

But a business enterprise unit, which was created with European funding, is set to continue at the school site.

Fresh fruit and vegetables can be ordered at Caf Epinay at the school, and The Food Chain will deliver orders every Thursday lunchtime.

A school spokesman said: "Epinay School is very proud of its vegetable plots, and the school's enterprise pupils have developed a range of entrepreneurial horticultural business ideas, that have involved planting within the school grounds.

"Working in partnership with The Food Chain will also offer Epinay School the opportunity to sell any surplus home-grown fruit and veg to The Food Chain, that will be sold across the North East."

Dianne Mountain, the school's newly-appointed business development manager, said: "This is another great opportunity for pupils of Epinay to experience business developmenbt, marketing and sales techniques, while at the same time enhancing their own skills and confidence."

Packets of fruit and vegetables sell from 2.
