North East hosts World Cup bid team visit
GLOBAL football bosses have been in the North East, running the rule over what it has to offer as part of England's 2018 World Cup bid.
FIFA officials visited Sunderland's Stadium of Light and Newcastle's St James's Park yesterday.
At Sunderland, they were shown around the ground by club chairman Niall Quinn, who played in two World Cups for the Republic of Ireland.
He said: "We haven't had any feedback from the FIFA inspectors – but, from our perspective, I don't think we could have done anything more.
"We will know how we did when the decision is announced on December 2."
The delegation was greeted at St James's Park by Newcastle's managing director Derek Llambias, former United and England star Peter Beardsley, and city council leader David Faulkner.
Coun Faulkner said: "We had a good hour with the inspectors, and it has gone really well."
