New store opening in old Woolworths

JOBS will be created when a new store opens in Jarrow shopping centre next week.

Store Twenty One, which will occupy part of the former Woolworths store, will open for business in Bede Precinct on Friday, July 16.

The new retailer will create nine part-time sales assistant jobs and a further two full-time management posts at the store, which has been empty since Woolworths ceased trading, in January 2009.

Covering 4,112sq ft, the new store will sell everything from family fashions to household items.

Coun Ken Stephenson, for the Primrose ward, which includes the shopping centre, said: "I'm delighted a new store is opening at the former Woolworths store.

"It's positive news that it will create much-needed employment in the town and also provide a new retail outlet for local shoppers."

A company spokesman said: "Store Twenty One is one of the country's fast-growing fashion and homeware retailers, and has opened more than 50 stores nationwide since 2006, with another 20 planned to open by the end of 2010.

"The stores offer extraordinary value, with exciting and practical fashion for the whole family, as well as a great range of lamps, cushions, vases and all sorts of other inspiring ideas that will add style and colour to your home."

Shoppers were disappointed when the former Woolworth store closed, after trading in the town since the launch of the shopping centre in the early 1960s.

It is hoped a senior borough councillor will officially launch the store next week.

A Store Twenty One spokesman said the new shop will be "a fantastic asset to Jarrow's high street."

The new retailer has taken up about half of the floor space at the old Woolworths store.
