Miracle man beats cancer without any treatment
A RETIRED teacher stunned doctors when they told him he had beat his cancer without any treatment.
Peter Crane, of East Boldon, had been diagnosed with a form of leukaemia 18 months ago and told while it can be treated, it cannot be cured.
But when he went for blood tests at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital last week, the 60-year-old was told he had gone into spontaneous remission and there was no trace of the cancer.
Mr Crane, who is married to Mary, 58, said: "I was in shock, to be honest, when they told me. My blood counts had been normal for about 12 months, so it had disappeared naturally without treatment.
"The doctors said to go into spontaneous remission is very rare but it's not unique, and I am not saying it won't come back but, for now, it's a huge weight off my mind."
Mr Crane, of Ravensbourne Avenue, had been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, CLL – one of the most common forms of the disease – and told he would need urgent treatment.
But his symptoms gradually subsided, and he was given the good news by his consultant.
Mr Crane is set to start a 450-mile coast-to-coast bike ride through France, and is hoping to highlight his situation to give hope to others.
The ride will take him and his wife from the French coast near Arcachon, via Bordeaux and Toulouse, to Narbonne nine days later.
Mr Crane said: "It was something we really wanted to do, and with Leukaemia Research being a charity close to my heart, we decided try raising some money for it as well."
"I have been fit and well throughout, and have been able to get on with things as normal, such as cycling, cricket, golf and squash.
"I'm sure that I will be cycling with renewed energy and speed, such is the weight that has been taken off my mind."
Now the couple are hoping as many people as possible will sponsor them to raise money for the charity.
