Matthew tries to find sponsorship

A RISING teenage rugby star from South Tyneside is looking for sponsorship to further his career.

Matthew Mellish, 18, lives with his mother Haidi, a dental nurse, and dad Paul, a fireman, in Lumley Avenue, South Shields.

He is a former pupil of Harton Technology College, and now goes to Barnard Castle School, in County Durham, after winning a 100 per cent scholarship. He represents the school's rugby union team at scrum-half.

He has also represented the North of England under-18s, Westoe RFC in South Shields and the Newcastle Falcons Academy.

Now he is bursting to set off on a rugby tour of South Africa on July 17 with the school – and is looking for local business backing.

Matthew said: "I'm grateful for any sponsorship we get, because going to South Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Any money will help us greatly.

"I would love to make it professionally, but we'll see how it goes."

His mum said: "We're really proud of Matthew. It's a big step for a South Shields lad to go to boarding school. He's worked hard for everything he's got."

The ball has been set rolling by Co-operative Funeralcare, in Westoe Road, South Shields, which donated 100.

Manager Chris May had no hesitation in helping out. He said: "Matthew's dad used to work for us, and I have followed his progress as a rugby player for the past few years. I immediately said 'yes' and passed on the cheque.

"He's a fine young man, and the fact that he achieved the scholarship at Barnard Castle speaks volumes about him."

If anyone wants to help Matthew they should contact the family on 07791 344496.
