Green light for house plan after rehab unit dismissed

CONVERSION PLANS ... Wyvestow Lodge in Sunderland Road, South Shields.

WORRIED residents have been given a personal assurance from the man behind a plan to convert an historic South Tyneside building.

Concern had been expressed after it emerged that vacant Wyvestow Lodge in Sunderland Road, South Shields, was to be converted to an 18-bed ‘house in multiple occupation’.

But members of South Tyneside Council’s planning committee gave the plan the go-ahead after being told the former government building was earmarked for student accommodation.

People living near the listed Victorian building had been concerned over the ‘vagueness’ of the original application.

They believed it could leave the property open to conversion into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation unit.

At a meeting of the planning committee this week, residents’ fears were raised by Independent Alliance councillor Ahmed Khan.

The Beacon and Bents ward representative said: “I would not be able to support this unless we know the potential people who will occupy it.”

It led to an intervention by the applicant, Paul Brown, of Wharton Street, South Shields.

Mr Brown said the intention was for the premises to house mature marine students from South Tyneside College.

He told the committee: “I can give an assurance that I have no plans for a rehabilitation unit.”

Members gave the application the green light.

These massive grade-1-2 propertys are all over the shop in Shields as there is another just at the ashley nursary on Stanhope Road, but this one pictured was all little buisness premises in seperate parts inside as it is a nice big building ideal for like of the shieks as there dads pay thousands up-front for there sons to go to the marine college so there-fore it would go hand in hand with good students dig's. Well at least there not ripping it down as it is part of Westoe's history and i am personally glad some one has stepped in to do the right thing at last. @Planning Portal - I take it monkey boy has had his bit that no -one reads to say again ,life full of bringing south-shields in to negative publicity and just plain rubbish talk that nobody is interested in you loony , back in your hole you mole.

I know the guy planning to develope this property, he will only consider good tenants. There will certainly be no problems, if it goes ahead.

"I would not be able to support this unless we know the potential people who will occupy it.” Does the Councillor want a list of names, with references? "Westoe World".
