Fresh warning on danger drugs

THIS is the huge haul of dangerous drugs seized by police after raids in South Tyneside.

Four thousand pills, as well as cannabis plants and cocaine, were confiscated after swoops on eight homes in the borough on Tuesday.

The pills are part of a potentially fatal batch of club drug Ecstasy that left five people in hospital after taking the pills on Saturday night.

One of the five was in critical condition until Monday morning. All have now been released and are recovering at home.

Five men, aged 20, 21, 24, 25, and 26, were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the supply of controlled drugs following the raids, taking the total number of arrests over the contaminated pills to 12.

And police are warning that some of the pills, which forensic tests uncovered also included an unknown harmful substance, could still be in circulation.

Laboratory tests on the tablets are due to be completed today.

In the wake of Saturday's events, there will be an extra police presence in South Shields over the weekend.

A police spokeswoman said: "Neighbourhood officers will be engaging with pub and club-goers and reiterating the safety messages issued last weekend.

"We are still gathering intelligence regarding last weekend's incidents and would ask anyone with any information to contact police.

"Information provided will be treated in strict confidence and acted upon." Specialist NHS workers will also be dispatched to pubs and clubs around South Shields tonight and tomorrow.

Janice Chandler, joint commissioning manager at NHS South of Tyne and Wear, said: "Impurities in drugs can be dangerous to consume in themselves.

"Anyone who may be thinking of taking illegal drugs should be aware of this increased risk and be very cautious."

DCI Peter Bent added: "If anyone has bought drugs which look like this, they could have very dangerous, and potentially fatal consequences."

Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Confidential drug advice is available from NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
