Faces from Dr Who's past head for town

DOCTOR Who fans will be able to go back in time and meet some of the show's former stars at a special event in South Tyneside.

Visitors will be able to meet the show's sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, Sophie Aldred, who played Ace, Terry Molloy, who played Davros, and Nicholas Courtney, who played the recurring role of Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart.

The Time Lord get-together takes place at a family fun day at the Temple Park Centre in South Shields this weekend.

Fans will also be able to operate a Dalek, before a music concert by a local orchestra group featuring the world's best-known sci-fi tunes in the evening.

Event organiser and orchestra composer George Hastings said: "We did a similar event in Lanchester, County Durham, a few years ago, and it was extremely successful. So we thought we would do it on a bigger scale, at a bigger venue.

"There will be plenty of fun events during the day, but the main focus will be on the concert in the evening.

"We will be playing well-known tunes, and we have a few surprises in store for the audience."

The event starts at 10am on Sunday, where people will be able to pose for pictures with the actors, operate a Dalek, and buy official merchandise.

There will be a host of activities for the family, including face painting, and baking your own monster cake. Fans are also urged to come along in fancy dress.

At 7.30pm, the SoundPower Orchestra will be joined by the ShoeShop Quartet, South Tyneside Youth Choir of Aliens and the Poppleton School of Dance to perform a concert of famous sci-fi, movie and TV themes.

Conducted by Mr Hastings, the concert will include Doctor Who themes, and scores from Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond and more.

Don Fairley, manager of the Soundpower Orchestra group, said people will be travelling from around the country for the event.

He said: "We managed to get in touch with the former actors because our composer, George Hastings, is a personal friend of Colin Baker, who, of course, played Doctor Who.

"I've had phone calls from people from Manchester and London saying they're going to fly up just for this.

"Depending on how it goes, we may be taking it elsewhere around the region and around the country. It will be a great family fun day out."

Tickets are available from Temple Park on 456 9119 or by calling 0120 752 1013. Alternatively, e-mail soundpowerorchestra@yahoo.co.uk
