Disabled boy's plea touches Elton's heart

ROCKET Man Sir Elton John is helping a South Tyneside disabled boy's Disney Dream achieve lift-off.

Nine-year-old Christopher Cameron cannot wait to travel to Walt Disney World in Florida next month, thanks to the many generous people who responded to a Gazette-backed appeal.

The story of the plucky Hebburn schoolboy, who faces a daily battle with blindness, autism and a serious bone condition, has touched the hearts of ordinary South Tynesiders, and personalities from the world of sport and rock music, with even Prime Minister David Cameron donating a signed book to the Disney Dream appeal.

Now the veteran rock star has handed over a bundle of goodies to the appeal, including DVDs and a T-shirt.

Linda Cameron, Christopher's grandmother, who has helped co-ordinate the campaign, said: "I wrote to Elton John's production company, and it was great to receive so many goods, which we will auction at a fundraising event next month.

"Christopher is getting really excited about going on the trip to America."

Various VIPs have donated gifts for the appeal, including South Tyneside pop star Joe McElderry, Cheryl Cole and British boxing legend Sir Henry Cooper. Mrs Cameron has also received a football, signed by north-east football icon Sir Bobby Robson.

All the items donated will be auctioned at a fundraising event at High Lane Social Club, High Lane Row, Hebburn, on Friday, September 3, at 7pm. Tickets cost 5.

Various pubs, clubs and institutions have raised hundreds of pounds towards the appeal. Among them is The Longship pub, in Ushaw Road, Hebburn.

A team of charity champs from Fellgate Fitness Centre, Jarrow, including manager Steve Wilkinson, raised more than 1,200 for the appeal after climbing 4,600ft Ben Nevis in Scotland, as well as completing a Liverpool half-marathon.

The family hope to get close to their 10,000 Disney Dream target in the next few weeks, before Christopher and his family fly out to Florida next month.

Cheques for the appeal should be made payable to Christopher Cameron, and sent to Mrs Cameron at 9 Finchale Road, Hebburn, NE31 2HR.

Call her on 0790 670 2978 to book tickets for next month's charity night.
