Dalek brings some bank holiday fun

AN alien visitor failed to exterminate bank holiday fun on a visit to a South Tyneside library.

A Dalek – best known as an enemy of Doctor Who – was at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, in Ocean Road, on Saturday as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations.

The visit by the out-of-this-world creature coincided with a space-age exhibition and proved a big hit with both youngsters and adults attracting 1,800 people through the doors.

As it made its way along a recreation of a turn-of-the-century South Shields street, the Dalek was stopped by visitors keen to have their picture taken with it.

Among them was six-year-old Doctor Who fan Max Mellor from Forest Hall, Newcastle.

The youngster was with parents Candy and Stephen Mellor, and had taken along a selection of his drawings of the creature in action to show the alien.

Max said: "It's good. It's pretty cool."

The Dalek was designed and created by Robert Bosher of Birtley, Gateshead.

Meanwhile upstairs, youngsters were being turned into aliens with the help of face-painters.

Mum-of-three Karla Turnbull, from Whiteleas, South Shields, took along youngsters Grace, two, and Ben, four, to the event.

Mrs Turnbull said: "We didn't realise the Dalek was here. We just called in on our way to the Marine Park. When Ben saw the Dalek he was mesmerised."

Friend Rebecca Whitehead from Hetton-le-Hole, Sunderland, added: "We just called in for the children to have a look around the museum as part of our day out. It's really good what they are doing."

Sue Beeton, museum services manager for South Tyneside, said: "It really was a fantastic family-friendly fun day. It was really busy, and the Dalek was well-received. It was unbelievable how many people came along just to see the Dalek. It was brilliant.

"We even had some visitors coming in with their own remote-controlled Daleks, which added to the fun.

"The Dalek helped make this one of our most successful events, and brought a lot of new visitors to the museum."
