COUN DAVID POTTS ... attended a police station voluntarily.

A COUNCILLOR has been quizzed by police over an alleged breach of data protection after a stormy Town Hall meeting.

Coun David Potts attended voluntarily at South Shields police station, accompanied by a solicitor.

The UKIP representative for Cleadon and East Boldon was questioned after confidential documents were taken out of a behind-closed-doors hearing and handed to the Gazette.

Coun Potts wrote to the council to express his anger about the meeting, which had to be abandoned, and also made similar claims to the Gazette.

The document, which allegedly contained information relating to an ongoing council disciplinary matter, was handed over at Gazette reception, and was returned to the local authority.

A police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm we are making enquiries into an allegation relating to a breach of data protection.

“A man has been spoken to voluntarily.”

Coun Potts said: “I can confirm I voluntarily attended South Shields police station with my legal team, and I intend to fully co-operate with police as their investigations continue.”

When contacted today, a South Tyneside Council spokesman said the matter was being dealt with by Northumbria Police.
